Holding comprehensive measures to protect the Caspian Sea by Azerbaijan will continue in further years that will contribute even better cleaning of its area of waters from pollution and removal of the Absheron Peninsula from the list of pollution sources, said in a statement of the Ecological Department State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR). Today Azerbaijan celebrates the Day of protection of the Caspian Sea environment.
According to the report, most of the oil produced by Azerbaijan falls to the fields, located in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian sea. Also during the ongoing geological exploratory operations on the Caspian Sea and adjacent areas a number of major oil and gas fields were revealed.
That is why SOCAR since 2000, conducts monitoring to assess the Caspian Sea's impact on the environment. It is conducted for early revealing the processes occurring in the sea, their evaluation, forecasting the development of these processes, continuous monitoring of hydrological, hydro-geological, hydro-biological and hydro-chemical indicators.
Also, in order to examine pollution of oil and petroleum products as a result of work of drilling rigs and other equipment, as well as violation of the natural state of bottom sediments, a monitoring is held twice a year. The purpose of the seasonal monitoring is to study the storage density of plankton placement, the study of nutrients in the upper and lower layers of water.
