The implementation of new hydropower plants construction projects in Georgia will enable the country to export up to 5 billion kWh of electricity in 2017, the Georgian Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources told Trend via mail on Friday.

"We plan to build five new hydropower plants in the next five years. Following these projects implementation, Georgia will increase electricity generation by 5.4 billion kWh and it is planned to export 5 billion kWh of electricity in 5 years," the Ministry said.

In particular, according to the ministry, the following hydropower plants are being constructed in Georgia:

Moreover, the large rehabilitation project of the Inguri hydroelectric power station is being implemented in the country now. Following the rehabilitation, its installed capacity will reach 1,300 MW. The project is planned to be completed by approximately 2014.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, electricity production in Georgia increased from 7.2 billion kWh to 9 billion kWh in 2002-2012. About 90 percent of the all electricity produced in Georgia fall on hydroelectric power plants. The significant increase in electricity production resulted from construction of two new hydropower plants in this period - Kodori HPP with installed capacity of 5 MW and Kodori HPP-2 with installed capacity of 26 MW.

At present, Georgia has 50 hydropower plants of small, medium and large capacities. Annual electricity production at these HPPs hit 9 billion kWh. Power consumption amounted to 9.2 billion kWh in Georgia in 2011.
