Lithuania is interested in buying Azerbaijani gas, Lithuanian Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas told journalists on Wednesday.

"We have to maintain relations with the Russian company 'Gazprom', but these relations are not always equal. Therefore, we need to develop relations with other countries that can supply energy resources so we can end this dependence and develop equal relations with all countries.

"Our cooperation with Azerbaijan may play an important role in it. We need to talk about the possibility of the supply of Azerbaijani natural gas to Lithuania. We are interested in diversifying our supplies. This can be beneficial for both countries," Sekmokas said.

He said it can be done through swap operations which are supply to one supplier, which will then re-supply these resources to Lithuania.

"At present, Lithuania consumes about three to four billion cubic meters of gas, so we can talk approximately about such these volumes. I think we can start with a smaller volume and then see how the market develops. We have come to Azerbaijan to start negotiations," Sekmokas said.
