Turkmenistan ready to increase export of energy resources to Iran

The Turkmen government has stressed there are good prospects for increasing exports of electricity and energy to Iran. This was said during a recent meeting of the intergovernmental Turkmen-Iranian commission for economic cooperation in Tehran, the Turkmen government said today.
'The Turkmen side stressed good prospects for increasing the export of electricity and energy to neighbouring Iran, using ever-increasing demand on the world market, as well as other high quality products', a statement said. The results of the meeting were reflected in the protocol.
Power engineering is one of the leading sectors of the Turkmen national economy. At this stage work is underway to establish a loopback energy system to reconstruct and modernise several power units, to introduce advanced energy-saving technologies.
According to the development strategy, the level of power generation in Turkmenistan is planned to be increased to 35.5 billion kW / h by 2030.
Transport capacity at this stage allows the country to export electricity to Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey and Central Asia.
Around 2.850 billion cubic meters of natural fuel were transported through this gas pipeline to neighbouring Iran within six months, or 215 million cubic meters more than last year.
The Korpeje-Gurtguyy gas pipeline beginning from the western deposits of the country was commissioned in December 1995. Its capacity has been brought up to eight billion cubic meters a year. There is potential to increase the pipeline capacity to 14 billion cubic meters.
Two neighbouring countries have been commissioning additional capacity since late December 2009. The Dovletabad-Sarahs gas pipeline with a capacity up to six billion cubic meters a year was built from the east of Turkmenistan to the border of Iran. The branch from Sarakhs to the settlement of Sangbast via Hangeran in Iran was opened in November 2010. There is potential for increasing the capacity of the gas pipeline two-fold.
