The United Arab Emirates plans to start production of nuclear energy from 2017, Al Arabiya TV channel quotes Mohamed Al Hammadi, Chief Executive Officer at the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) as saying.
According to Al Hammadi, in the first phase 1,400 megawatts of energy will be generated. By 2020, four nuclear power stations with capacity 5600 megawatt will be commissioned.
It is expected that demand for electricity in the UAE will rise to 40,000 megawatts by 2020, he said.
Al Hammadi said that the ENEC announced tender worth $3 billion for uranium supply to nuclear power plants.
