Kazakh Ekibastuz GRES-1 power plant has increased electricity production by 13.5 percent to 15 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2012 compared to 2011, the company reported on Tuesday.

The production indices were increased due to restoration of the power unit N 8 in July 2012. The power unit has produced 1 billion kWh of electricity by now.

"We are pleased to announce that the restored unit N 8, which stood idle for 17 years, demonstrates stable production and economic results", Kazakhmys Corporation's CEO Nicholas Korobovsky said.

The repair works at power unit N 8 of Ekibastuz GRES-1 were worth 23 billion tenge (150.26 tenge = $1).

Ekibastuz GRES-1 implements investment program which envisages several stages of modernization of five operating units and restoration of three idle units. Moreover, electrostatic precipitators will be launched at the power plant which will minimize the impact on the environment. The modernization and restoration program is worth 280 billion tenge and will be completed by 2016.

Ekibastuz-1 is owned by Kazakh Samruk-Energy and Kazakhmys group on a parity basis.
