Iraq plans to increase the production of associated gas in the short term and bring it up to 57 million cubic meters a day, the spokesman for the Iraqi Oil Ministry Asym Jihad told Trend.

According to him, the daily volume of gas production in Iraq has risen sharply, reaching about 31 million cubic meters.

Jihad said Basra Gas Company started its activities in early May and, due to several projects of the company, the gas production in Iraq in the coming months will increase dramatically.

The largest amount of associated gas is produced in the oil fields of Iraq "Rumaila," "Al-Zabir" and "West Qurna," he said.

Earlier Jihad informed Trend that by the end of 2017 Iraq will start producing the necessary export volumes of natural gas, and will begin the deliveries only in 2018.

According to BP, the proven gas reserves of Iraq as of late 2011 amounted to 3.6 trillion cubic meters.
