In January-September 2013, Uzbekistan increased electricity production by 3.1 per cent up to 40.356 billion kWh compared to the same period of 2012, a source in government circles told Trend on Wednesday.

Since early 2013, power plants in Uzbekistan provided the country's population and enterprises with 13,108 million Gcal of heat energy, a decrease of 2.4 per cent.

In 2012, electricity production in the country increased by 0.2 per cent compared to 2011 - up to 52.534 billion kWh. Uzbekistan's power plants provided the population and enterprises with 18,876 million Gcal of heat energy, a decrease of 0.2 per cent.

Currently, Uzbekistan's energy system includes 45 power plants with a total capacity of approximately 12,400 MW.

Up to 90 per cent of the electricity is produced at 10 thermal power stations belonging to the State Joint-Stock Company (SJSC) Uzbekenergo, with a total installed capacity of 10.6 million kW. The company's 29 water power plants with an installed capacity of 1.4 million kW are mostly combined in cascades of water power plants and work on a watercourse.

In total, over 98 per cent of electricity in Uzbekistan is produced at the power plants of the SJSC Uzbekenergo, established under the auspices of the Ministry of Electricity and Electrification of Uzbekistan.

The rest of the electricity is generated by autonomous thermal power plants of the industrial enterprises and small hydroelectric power stations, included in Uzbekistan's Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources.
