The construction of the second combined-cycle plant at the "Shimal" power plant which is important in the energy supply of the Absheron Peninsula will be completed by mid-2015, according to Deputy Director of Energy Department of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Industry and Energy Asaf Rzayev.

The plant was planned to commission by end of the year, but due to delays in delivery of equipment the progress of work is being delayed, according to the deputy director.

"The work on the construction of the plant is planned to be completed by the middle of next year, but these terms can be slightly adjusted," he said.

Touching upon the new generating facilities, Rzayev said that it is planned to construct stations in the Yashma settlement and the Hovsan power plant.

The capacity of the Yashma power plant will be 920 megawatts. Japanese Toyo Engineering Corporation has already presented the primary version of the feasibility study of the project, according to Rzayev.

"The work within this project will be continued," he noted.

The construction of 600-megawatt Hovsan power plant will allow to provide Baku White City [grand urban project] with electricity. Also new metallurgical enterprise fall in the coverage zone of the power plant.

The Baku White City project was approved by the special decree of Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev. According to the new development project, a modern and great residential center will be established on environmentally unfriendly areas polluted by oil and oil waste. Administrative buildings, various trade centers, as well as a boulevard connecting the recreation parks and the new residential center with the sea will be built here.

Half of the electricity produced by Hovsan power plant will be directed for the energy supply of the White City, according to the ministry`s representative.

The capacity of the second "Shimal" combined-cycle power plant will be 409 megawatts. At present, power plant satisfies a quarter of the electricity needs of Baku and Absheron. With the construction of the second block, this figure will reach 35-40 percent. The construction of the second energy power plant is based on a contract concluded with the Japanese "Toyo Engineering" company.

Currently, the Shimal power plant has one combined-cycle unit with capacity of 400 megawatt.
