By Seba Aghayeva - Trend:

Azerbaijan can get access to the Trans-African gas pipeline to transit its gas to Europe through Algerian ports, Azerbaijani ambassador to Algeria Mahir Aliyev told Trend.

Algeria has two huge ports that transport liquefied and natural gas and Azerbaijan can use them, said the diplomat.

The energy sphere is one of the promising areas of cooperation between the two countries, he added.

"Like Azerbaijan, Algeria is rich with energy resources, " said the ambassador. "Algeria ranks 13th-14th in the world for the production volume of oil and gas."

He added that Algeria produces and exports nearly 2.5 million barrels of oil per day.

Algeria supplies gas to many African and European countries. The country is the third largest gas producer in the Arab region after Qatar and Saudi Arabia, as well as a leading exporter in Africa.

Algerian Energy Ministry has already expressed interest in creating cooperation with Azerbaijan in the energy sphere. In particular, Algeria's Sonatrach company expressed desire to cooperate with SOCAR.

A delegation led by Ahmed Messili, Algerian governor for OPEC, secretary general of the country's Ministry of Energy visited Baku in April 2015.

During the visit, the delegation had negotiations with the leadership of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan. The sides stressed the need to study and analyze the mutual opportunities and to determine the main areas of cooperation.

The Algerian side also supported the participation of Azerbaijani companies in the tenders on energy projects in Algeria.
