Japanese Sumitomo to build power plant in Turkmenistan

The Japanese Sumitomo Corporation will build a gas turbine power plant on the Turkmen-Afghan border, the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan said in a statement Sept. 11.

The company is currently implementing a project to build a gas turbine power plant in the Lebap region of Turkmenistan. The "Turkmenenergo" State Corporation acts as the customer of the project.

This enterprise with a capacity of 432 megawatts will occupy an area of more than four hectares. Commissioning of the power plant is planned for 2018.

The subcontractors of the project are Turkish Rönesans Construction company and Japanese Mitsubishi Corporation.

This project will help to increase supply of Turkmen electricity to neighboring Afghanistan, which receives it on favorable terms.

The electric power industry is one of the leading sectors of the national economy of Turkmenistan, which is aimed at fully meeting the local needs of industry, agriculture, social sector, as well as increasing exports. Currently, Iran is also buying Turkmen electricity.
