Last year, some 2,896,100 tons of waste was generated by households, enterprises and organizations in Azerbaijan, which exceeds the preceding year’s figures by 5.1 percent, Trend reports referring to the State Statistical Committee.

About 60.6 percent of the total waste consisted of solid waste, while 39.4 percent consisted of waste resulting from the activities of enterprises.

Last year, according to data provided by the State Statistical Committee, 31.2 percent of 1,756,100 tons of municipal solid waste was used for energy production, 0.3 percent was sold within the country, and 68.5 percent was taken to landfills. In particular, 162.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity were produced using household waste.

In industry and other sectors of the economy, 27.7 percent of processed raw materials and industrial waste was used for energy production, 16.2 percent was sold within the country, 0.9 percent was exported, 12.4 percent was taken to landfills and 42.8 percent remained in the enterprises.

During the production processes at the enterprises, 338.700 tons of hazardous waste was generated, which is 27.3 percent more than in the preceding year, with its share in the total volume of waste being 11.7 percent.

Last year, 64,200 tons of hazardous wastes was completely disposed of, including the part that was accumulated from previous years. 49.9 percent of the waste was generated in mining enterprises, mostly from those located in Baku.
