Iran's electricity generation capacity to grow

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 6

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

About 20,000 megawatt-hours of electricity will be added to Iran’s total electricity generation capacity by the end of the current government in Iran (August 2021), said Mohsen Tarztalab, Managing Director of Iran’s Thermal Power Plants Holding Company, Trend reports citing the company’s website.

Tarztalab stressed that currently, Iran's electricity generation capacity is 86,000 megawatt-hours, of which 68,000 megawatt-hours are accounted for by thermal power plants.

The director added that a total of 8.5 billion euro worth of investments have been made in the electricity generation sector in Iran since the current government came to power in Iran (2013). As a result, an average of 2,500 megawatt-hours of electricity was added to Iran’s total electricity generation capacity per year.

"At present, 16 investors are ready to build power plants in different regions of Iran. Iran has enough potential in terms of technology, design, and construction, and the only problem now is financial security," he added.

Tarztalab noted that if US sanctions against Iran are lifted and economic development takes place in Iran, thermal power plants with a generation capacity of 4,000 megawatt-hours of electricity should be built with an annual investment of 3.5 billion euros.

The US imposed new sanctions on Iran in November 2018. Over the past period, the sanctions affected Iranian oil exports, more than 700 banks, companies, and individuals.
