Georgia imported 1.6 billion kw/h of electricity in 2020, Trend reports via the Electricity Market Operator (ESCO).
Despite a 5 percent downturn in electricity consumption, imports volume remains the same and import-dependence has increased.
The item’s ratio in Georgia’s total imports in 2020 constituted 13 percent. Electricity imports value in 2020 made up $64.5 million. In 2020, Georgia imported electricity from Russia, Azerbaijan and Turkey, including 726 kw/h were imported from Turkey, which is 45 percent of total imports.
According to the ESCO, the Azerbaijani electricity is the most expensive – 5 cents for 1kw/h, while Turkish electricity costs 3 cents and Russian 4 cents.
Electricity imports due to countries:
Azerbaijan - 726.30 million kw/h, price - $36.39 million; tariff - 5 cents;
Russia - 570.60 million kw/h, price - $14.55 million; tariff - 3 cents;
Turkey - 313.10 million kw/h, price - $13.56 million; tariff – 4 cents;
Total - 1.61 billion kw/h, price - $64.51 million; tariff – 4 cents.
As for electricity exports, the volume declined by 36 percent to 154 million kw/h. Georgian electricity exports price made up 3.8 cents and the 2020 incomes from electricity constituted $5.8 million, down 11 times compared to imports.
