Iran to build numerous biogas power plants in Tehran province

TEHRAN, Iran, Aug. 21

Trend:

Water and Wastewater Department of Tehran Province planned to construct and operate 20 biogas power plants, to be among the largest producers of electricity and heat (CHP) from wastewater in the world, Trend reports citing Mehr News Agency.

Biogas is produced from the anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic matter, such as manure, MSW, sewage sludge, biodegradable wastes, and agricultural slurry, under anaerobic conditions with the help of microorganism.

The biogas power plant of the South Tehran Wastewater Treatment Plant is one of the largest wastewater biogas plants in the world, has a nominal annual electricity generation capacity of 44 gigawatts as well as 140 terajoules of thermal energy, which is equivalent to the power supply of a six-acre residential town.

The operation of this power plant reduces the annual greenhouse gas emissions by about 150,000 tons.
Iran's Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (known as SATBA) has signed a deal with the Water and Wastewater Department of Tehran Province to purchase the electricity generated by the country’s only biogas power plant which is run by the mentioned department.

Based on the deal SATBA is going to purchase about 500 billion kilowatt-hours (Kwh) of electricity over a 15-year period at a base price of 10,500 rials ($2.5), the portal of the Energy Ministry, PAVEN reported.

This power plant is currently producing energy at its maximum capacity at the peak of electricity consumption, so that from September 2014 to the end of July 2021, the power plant has produced over 65 million kilowatt-hours of energy.

Water and Wastewater Department of Tehran Province sets to Construct and operate of 20 biogas power plants with an average capacity of one megawatt of electrical energy and 1.2 megawatts of thermal energy per unit and an annual production of 200 gigawatts of electricity and 700 trajectories of thermal energy.
