BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb.16. European Union’s pipeline gas imports dropped by 13 percent in January 2023, as compared to December 2022, standing at 12.7 billion cubic meters, Trend reports with reference to the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).

The pipeline natural gas imports to EU were 35 percent lower, as compared to January 2022, according to GECF’s The Monthly Gas Market Report. The decrease in imports was driven by lower supplies from Russia, while Azerbaijan and Norway boosted gas transportation to the continent.

GECF notes that the major part of supplies from Norway, namely 48 percent goes to Germany, however, some part of it is expected to be transported to Poland via the Baltic Pipe.

The major gas transportation routes from Russia are the transit pipelines running through Ukraine and the TurkStream pipeline.

“With the continued influx of LNG imports to the UK, there has been a substantial volume of PNG entering the region via the interconnectors, reaching 1.0 bcm in January. Figure 58 shows the EU PNG imports via the major supply routes, in January 2023, versus the same month in the previous year. Russian PNG flows have observed declines in all routes, and quantities from Norway recorded decreases or remained stable to its major markets,” reads the report.
