BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 11. Iran's electricity generation capacity is expected to increase by 7,700 megawatt-hours by the beginning of the current summer season in the country (July 22, 2023), the Spokesman of the Iranian Energy Ministry Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

The spokesman noted that of the mentioned volume, 6,000 megawatts will be achieved by putting new power plants into use, and 1,700 megawatts - by increasing the electricity generation capacity of existing power plants.

Rajabi Mashhadi added that in order to the increase Iran’s power generation capacity, 140 programs have been regulated.

“At present, a number of thermal power units with a total generation capacity of 1,478 megawatt-hours are being launched in the country under the 47 programs,” he said.

In total, Iran's all power plants including, thermal, hydroelectric, nuclear, renewable, and etc. generated 359 million megawatt-hours of electricity over the last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022). About 95 percent of this is accounted for by the country’s thermal power plants.

At present, there are 134 thermal power plants operating in Iran. So far, 612 power units have been installed in the mentioned power plants. The power generation capacity of Iran’s TPPs is currently 73,695 megawatt-hours.
