BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 5. The gas swap from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan through Iran has reached 10 million cubic meters per day since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2023), the Executive Director of the Iranian Gas Transmission Company, Gholam Abbas Hosseini, told reporters, Trend reports.

The director noted that last year (March 21, 2022–March 20, 2023), an average of 4.5 million cubic meters of Turkmen gas were swapped to Azerbaijan via Iran.

Hosseini added that Iran delivers the gas it takes from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan in the northwest of the country. Of course, due to the cold weather last winter, gas supplied to Iran for the purpose of swapping was stopped by Turkmenistan for 15 days.

"Currently, Iran has the capacity to import 20 million cubic meters of gas daily from Turkmenistan," he said.

As reported, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkmenistan signed a contract to swap gas supplies in the Turkmen capital on November 28, 2021. The document provided for the supply of Turkmen gas to Azerbaijan through Iran in the amount of up to 1.5–2 billion cubic meters per year. The implementation of the contract began on January 1, 2022.

Azerbaijan's Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov and Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji signed a memorandum of understanding in Baku on June 3, 2022, according to which it was envisaged to double the supply of Turkmen gas to Azerbaijan through Iran.

Iran stands second in the world for gas reserves, with about 34 trillion cubic meters of gas. Reportedly, Iran's gas production capacity is more than 1 billion cubic meters.
