Money transfers from abroad to Georgia increase

Money transfers from abroad to Georgia have increased by 32 percent in the last four years, Trend reports via the Georgian State Commission on Migration Issues.

The biggest amount of money transfers comes from Russia. The report notes that in recent years money transfers have increased from Israel and Europe.

The amount of money transfers to Georgia in September 2019 was $149.8 million, which is a 13.9 percent increase compared to September 2018.

Meanwhile, more than one-third of money transfers come in from EU countries - $56.9 million (38 percent), from other countries - $92.8 million (62 percent).

The largest countries which transferred money into Georgia were: Russia - $36.3 million (24.24 percent), Italy –$21 million (14.07 percent), Greece – $15.9 million (10.63 percent), US – $15.3 million (10.28 percent), Israel – $13.5 million (9.05 percent).

The report also says that in 2015-2017 foreign direct investments surpassed money transfers, but the situation changed in 2018.

In 2018, money transfers to Georgia stood at 200 million lari ($67.7 million).
