EU provides funds to assist Georgia in implementation of Anti-Crisis Economic Plan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec.14

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

The European Union (EU) has disbursed a 60 million euros grant as part of the EU’s 75 million euros COVID-19 Resilience Contract for Georgia to assist in the implementation of the government’s Anti-Crisis Economic Plan, Trend reports via the EU Delegation to Georgia.

The plan is composed of measures aimed at reducing the negative effects of losses of income and preserving jobs, supporting businesses, and strengthening the healthcare system.

The overall aim of EU financial support is to help citizens and businesses of Georgia recover from the impact of the pandemic.

This payment follows the EU’s transfer of 100 million euros in loans for macro-financial assistance on November 25.

Both payments are part of the wider 1.5 billion lari ($458.1 million) EU support package for Georgia, which also covers support to the health and social sector and economic recovery.

EU assistance includes:
- strengthening the Georgian government’s anti-COVID-19 crisis efforts including its anti-crisis economic plan and new programs for regional/rural development and agriculture;

- almost 2 million pieces of medical supplies, including ventilators, medical masks, and gowns for Georgian laboratories and medical facilities, in partnership with WHO;

- financial support to civil society organizations to assist those most vulnerable during the crisis, including persons with disabilities, victims of domestic violence, the elderly, children, and internally displaced persons.
