BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 21. Kazakhstan has great experience in the development of agriculture, taking into account climate change, Kazakhstan's Vice Minister of Agriculture Yermek Kenzhekhanuly told Trend on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku.

“On November 19, days of agriculture within the framework of COP29 events were held. At the invitation of the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan, we took part in all events. Of course, we raise issues within the framework of the fight against climate change. Those issues related to environmental issues are all relevant today.

In the framework of these sessions, first of all, we exchanged experiences about how each country fights with the consequences, because of which we have environmental problems. We can say that each country presented its practical mechanisms. Of course, Kazakhstan also has a very great experience in developing agriculture in the light of climate change. Just last year, we adopted a large concept for the development of the agro-industrial complex until 2030. It provides for all the mechanisms of agricultural development,” he said.

Kenzhekhanuly noted that in principle, all countries agree that to date, in general, agriculture is underfunded.

“In this direction, Kazakhstan is doing a lot of work. Literally within one year, Kazakhstan has brought the issue of financing just in terms of crediting spring field work and harvesting companies to $1.2 million. This is a large volume, which is directed to crediting. The head of state has set a task for us to bring the volume of financing up to $3 billion. If today the volume of finance has been brought to $1.2 billion, the task is to bring it to $3 billion. We hope that we will reach this figure in 2025,” added the vice minister.

To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run until November 22, opened at the Baku Olympic Stadium on November 11. It is the largest event organized by Azerbaijan to date, and the first time in the region that it is being held in Azerbaijan.

Within COP29, the highest-level event - the summit of world leaders on climate action - was held on November 12–13.

The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance. The COP29 Presidency has launched 14 initiatives that include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies, and other topics.

In addition to being a top priority that creates the conditions for action, creating climate finance will also help fulfill the 1.5°C pledge by bringing everyone together.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
