Azerbaijani Institute of Information Technologies expands network infrastructure of ElmNet academic network

The Institute of Information Technologies under the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences has begun to expand the network infrastructure of ElmNet academic network, the institute told Trend.

The work include modernization, increase in functionality and quality of service network. The institute has completed the creation of the Internet center for ElmNet network infrastructure, uniting a number of academic institutions.

The network is designed to facilitate an information exchange with foreign scientific and educational networks, accumulate information resources and support the information environment among departments of the Academy of Sciences.

The project has three main objectives to assist in establishing international links available for research and academic networks, the growth of network infrastructure and information exchange and training of the personnel to work with the network.

The project is under development. Special attention is paid to the service oriented on the end-user. It is assumed that the scale of coverage of the network will continue to increase.

ElmNet's data transfer speed exceeds 100 megabytes per second.

The academic network will work in three directions - the Institute of Geology, the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Cybernetics.

Each of the three segments unites other structures of the Academy of Sciences. There are 1,400 computers involved in the academic network.

The institute has also developed a conceptual analysis to form an e-education network infrastructure. According to the plan, the network's infrastructure, material and technical base, and internal corporate infrastructure will be created until 2012.
