Number of domain names in Uzbekistan increases to 11,000

The number of registered domains in Uzbekistan was 11,000 by late December, the UZ domain zone Web site reported.

Currently, 59 percent of the 11,000 domains were registered by legal entities and 41 percent by individuals.

The number of domains registered through Tomas was over 35.7 percent of the total figure. It was followed by Billur Com with 24.4 percent, Arsenal-D with about 18.7 percent, Sarkor Telecom with 9.7 percent, BCC with 7.6 percent, TV-Inform with 1.4 percent and Simus with 1.2 percent.

According to published reports, there were 2,696 domains in 2006. In 2007 they were 3,615, in 2008 the number was 5,766 and in 2009 it was 7,595.

The growth in domain names in 2009 was 26 percent.

Second level UZ Domain was established in April 1995.

Administrator of second level domain UZ is the Center for development and introduction of computer and information technology UZINFOCOM.

UZINFOCOM was established in 2002 by presidential decree and is a structural division of the Uzbekistan Communications and Information Agency. UZINFOCOM aims to promote the development and implementation of a national ICT and computerization program.
