GSMA association talks about introduction of 5G for modern resource-intensive applications

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 23

By Sadraddin Aghjayev - Trend:

When new standards and technologies appear, human behavior on the network, as well as the type of applications that people use are changed, Strategic Engagement Director Cooperation in Russia and the CIS at GSMA association Tair Ismailov said in an interview with Trend.

“The applications are becoming more resource-intensive and demand more qualitative communication,” the director said.

"In accordance with the analytics from Ookla, the average data transfer rate in mobile communication networks around the world was 45.69 Mbps in 2020 while this figure was 22.82 Mbps in 2018," Ismailov added.

The director stressed that the numbers are by several times higher in some markets and the traffic consumed by the subscriber per month is growing exponentially every year.

"After the appearance of mobile internet, people used it only to send e-mail and visit simple websites, now we stream all the music and video from the internet rather than store the data on the phone, participate in group video calls and play online games," the director said.

Ismailov stressed that with the spread of new standards, the model of using the network resource is changing.

"The same will happen with spreading of 5G," the director said. "There will be fundamentally new applications and such ways of using them that only networks built upon new standards will cope with."
