BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 13

By Sadraddin Aghjayev - Trend:

The number of cyberattacks on the betting segment quadrupled worldwide in the second quarter of 2021, Founder and CEO of Qrator Labs Alexander Lyamin told Trend.

He noted that the holding of the European Football Championship was a landmark event in the second quarter of this year, which could not but affect the dynamics of attacks on the online resources of companies in various business areas.

“Although the second quarter is generally considered to be quite calm due to the start of the holiday period, this year, thanks to Euro 2020, we have seen an interesting dynamic in terms of attacks,” the CEO said.

In a number of industries, the workload has indeed dropped. For example, attacks on the gaming sector decreased fivefold (from 11.74 percent to 2.29 percent), and attacks on the FOREX segment - halved (from 5.87 percent to 2.74 percent), he said.

However, according to Lyamin, the attackers turned their attention to other areas of the business.

“In particular, the share of attacks on the betting segment quadrupled, from 2.2 percent to 8.38 percent, demonstrating a typical scenario for organizing custom DDoS attacks in a competitive environment. With the start of the European Football Championship, players in the sports betting industry began to actively advertise their services on the Internet, investing heavily in marketing. Therefore, it is not surprising that the number of attacks on this segment has sharply increased due to a significant aggravation of competition,” said the Qrator Labs CEO.
