Date of Hearings over Case between Maltese Bank and Azerbaijan Government Defined

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend S.Babayeva / The Azerbaijani Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies announced on 6y July that The next hearings at the Rotterdam Court on the lawsuit filed Maltese bank FIMbank on the Azerbaijani Government is scheduled for October.

The concrete issues to be discussed at the hearing will be determined later.

The Ministry expects the course of development in two scenarios - FIMbank might inquire conduct of hearings taking evidences by witnesses or take a sentence on organization of oral trial.

During the last hearings the court heard evidences by witnesses from both sides.

The Maltese Bank FIMbank demand from Azerbaijan to repay a $4.5mln loan, given to two Azerbaijan telecommunications companies under state guarantee, as the bank urges. Azerbaijan insists that these banks have not existed and the state guarantee was not provided.

In July of 2004, the Maltese FIMbank raised a claim against the Azerbaijani Government regarding the non-payment of credit issued under the guarantee of the Communications Ministry and AKB Pochtbank to non-existent enterprises of the Ministry, Aztell $3,035,000 and Baktell $1,560,000.
