Ukraine sees need to develop transport co-op with Azerbaijan (Exclusive)

The geography of the Silk Road will change, and in this regard, we want to develop river transport, Ukraine's Infrastructure Minister Vladyslav Krykliy told Trend commenting on the development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Ukraine within the Silk Road.

The minister noted that since the transport corridor is being modified, it is important to adapt to these changes.

"It is necessary to simplify the processes associated with documenting, customs, ports, unloading and others," Vladyslav Krykliy said.

The Ukrainian minister emphasized that digital transport corridors are being actively discussed, as they are important for fast and unhindered movement of goods.

"Next year we will begin the following work - to travel from the Black Sea through the Dnieper River to Belarus, then further go to the Gdansk port in Poland. So, we can connect the Baltic, Black and Caspian seas," Vladyslav Krykliy said.

In conclusion, the minister underlined that Ukraine needs to develop ferry links, as well as rail links with Azerbaijan and Georgia.

The international conference dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Multilateral Agreement on International Transport for the Development of the Europe-the Caucasus-Asia Corridor and the 14th meeting of the Permanent Secretariat of the TRACECA Intergovernmental Commission was held in Baku on Dec. 6.

The official representatives of TRACECA member-states and observer countries and representatives of international organizations participated in the event.

TRACECA is a program of international cooperation between the EU and the partner countries in the creation of the Europe-Caucasus-Asia transport corridor. In organizational terms, TRACECA is an intergovernmental commission.

TRACECA program was established in 1993 on the basis of the Brussels Declaration with the participation of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Moldova, Mongolia and Ukraine joined the program later; Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria in 2000, and Iran in 2009.
