International airport to be commissioned in Kazakhstan's Turkestan

International Airport in Kazakhstan’s Turkestan region will be commissioned before the end of 2020, Trend reports with reference to the regional akimat (administrative center).

Head of the region Umirzak Shukeyev visited the construction site of the airport and of the access road. The airport which is located 16 km from the Turkestan city, is being constructed in accordance with international standards and with the use of modern technology.

The airport is being constructed by the Turkish YDA Group, with the plans to be put into operation before the end of 2020. Currently, 102 units of special vehicles and over builders are taking part in the construction work.

The report said that in order to increase the tourist potential of the region, a special program was developed, which oversees plans to increase the number of tourists to the region to 5 million by 2025.

Launch of direct flights from Turkestan to Mecca (Saudi Arabia) from the international airport under construction is also planned.

The total area of the future international airport covers 900 hectares. The airport’s terminal will be able to serve about 3 million passengers a year. A new road, the total length of which will be 16.3 kilometers, will be linked to the new airport.
