Volume of cargo freight via Azerbaijani ports continues to grow

The total volume of cargo transshipment via Azerbaijani ports from January through September 2020 exceeded 6.5 million tons, up by 7.8 percent compared to the same period of 2019, Trend reports referring to the State Statistics Committee.

Some 6.2 million tons or 95.4 percent of the total volume of cargo transshipment in the past 9 months of 2020 accounted for international transit cargo, while 4.6 percent fell on local cargo. The volume of transit cargo shipment was by 12.2 percent more than in the same period of last year.

As of October 1, 2020, 179,500 tons of cargo were kept at the local ports.

In 2019, the volume of cargo transshipment through the seaports of Azerbaijan amounted to over 8.2 million tons, of which 7.5 million tons or 91.5 percent accounted for international transit cargo and 8.5 percent - for local cargo.

Meanwhile, 44,175 wagons were transshipped through the Alat Ferry Terminal (2.7 percent more than in 2018), 20,331 of which (46 percent of the total number of wagons) were sent on the Baku-Kuryk-Baku route, while 23,802 (53.9 percent) were sent on the Baku-Turkmenbashi-Baku route, and 42 wagons (0.1 percent) – on the Baku-Aktau-Baku route.

Furthermore, last year the number of passengers using the services of the port of Baku amounted to 46,265 people, and the volume of transshipment of containers and wheeled vehicles was the highest over the last 28 years.
