Weekly review of key events in Azerbaijan's transport sector

The establishment of the Azerbaijan Investment Holding and the transfer of the Azerbaijan Railways CJSC to its control will have a positive effect on increasing the economic efficiency of the investment programs being implemented, increasing their competitiveness, as well as improving financial stability, Chairman of the ADY Express LLC, the Azerbaijan Railways’ subsidiary, said this week, ADY Express told Trend.

The chairman noted the importance of the joint efforts of the state bodies, especially in terms of the development of the railway sector, increasing its efficiency, and enhancing corporate management.

Besides, the outgoing week was also remembered by discussions on restoring the dynamics of interaction between Belarus and Azerbaijan in the transport sector.

Thus, according to Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Igor Petrishenko, the cooperation bridgehead of the Azerbaijani Ganja Automobile Plant will help restore the dynamics of collaboration between the two countries.

Petrishenko hopes that this project will get a ‘new breath’ and work at full capacity.

He stressed that within the framework of expanding cooperation with Azerbaijan, Belarus is ready to supply trains for the Baku Metro.

At the same time, in the field of air transport of Azerbaijan, this week, an agreement was reached between the governments of Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan on the establishment of air communication.

Moreover, this week, the State Aviation Administration (SAA) of Ukraine allowed SkyUp Airlines to operate regular flights to Azerbaijan from April 1, 2021 on the Lviv-Baku-Lviv route twice a week.

In the outgoing week, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technologies Rashad Nabiyev, stated that in order to increase the efficiency of activities, harmonize the development strategies of sectoral transport structures of Azerbaijan with the overall development strategy of the country and ensure mutual coordination, there is a need to create a unified transport strategy that will ensure coherence in the implementation of projects by transport structures, elimination of existing difficulties in coordinating the interaction of modes of transport, efficient use of budgetary funds and land resources.

In this regard, Head of the PR department of the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee Natig Akhundov stated this week the entry of Annex 1 to the Customs Convention on the International Transport of Goods under Cover of TIR Carnets (TIR Convention), which envisages the legal basis for the eTIR procedure, into force in Azerbaijan is scheduled for May 2021.

"The technical adaptation for the application of this procedure is carried out by the State Customs Committee in accordance with the technical specifications developed by the Sustainable Transport Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and approved by the member-states of the TIR Convention," head of the department added.

In the field of maritime cargo shipment of Azerbaijan, the Baku International Sea Trade Port in 2020, despite the negative consequences of COVID-19, increased the transshipment of goods by 20 percent compared to 2019.
