Roughly 1.3M tons of melons and gourds harvested in southern Kazakhstan

Farmers of South Kazakhstan region harvested agricultural crops worth 376.5 billion tenge.

The figure is more by 57 billion tenge compared to 2016, the press service of the South Kazakhstan region reports.

This year the farmers harvested about 400,000 tons of grain, 116,000 tons of fruit and berries, 919,000 tons of vegetables, 295 ,000 tons of potatoes and 1.3 million tons of melons.

The crop area increased by 29,000 hectares compared to 2016 and amounted to 818,000 hectares. Moreover, this year for the first time in the region nuts were planted on an area of ​​59 hectares and almonds -7 hectares .

Along with this, the livestock sector of the South Kazakhstan region also recorded growth. The number of cattle increased by 5.8% compared to last year, sheep and goats by 1%, and horses by 19.5%.

The South Kazakhstan region ranks first in the republic for the livestock purchases. This year, 2,419 new small feeding farms, 656 family dairy farms, 22 family poultry farms, as well as 10 fish farms were launched in the region.

The total sown area in Kazakhstan in 2016 was 2,147 million hectares and grew by 2.1% compared to 2015. The sowing area for vegetables, root crops, tubers and melons in 2016 was 439,200 hectares and increased by 1.2% compared to 2015.
