UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay insists on an independent international investigation into the mass riots in the Kazakh city of Zhanaozen.
"I am appealing to ask for permission to conduct investigation into the events in Zhanaozen and attract international experts," Pillay said during a meeting with Chairman of the Constitutional Council of Kazakhstan, Igor Rogov.
She said no proper investigation has been conducted into the Zhanaozen events and "there were cases of ill-treatment, which is contrary to international conventions, to which Kazakhstan joined".
"I would like to see international norms and standards in protection of human rights are observed during court proceedings, and a fair trial is ensured, particularly in accordance with Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights," Pillay said.
Mass riots hit the Kazakh oil city of Zhanaozen in Mangystau region on Dec.16. According to the Kazakh General Attorney Office, 14 people were killed as a result and over 80 injured.
