Trend:

Presently, there are four sugar production plants in Kazakhstan presently, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan Zhenis Oserbay said, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Agriculture.

Two of them are in the Jambyl region, two in the Almaty region, he added.

“The modernization of these plants will be carried out and it is also planned to launch a new plant in the Jambyl region,” he said at a press conference.

The processing of the entire crop at the Merken sugar plant in the Jambyl region takes 75 days and this is due to the insufficient amount of commodity and sugar beet sowing areas, Oserbay said.

Three plants process raw sugar, he emphasized.

The factories totally can produce about 50,000 tons of sugar per month at full processing capacity.

"We are working on import substitution. The main task is the production of our own sugar beets, from which sugar is to be produced. About 10,000 tenge ($19.6) per ton is allocated annually for sugar beets and up to 350,000 tons of sugar beets are harvested, he noted.

A large irrigation program is also being carried out in order to stimulate farmers.

A total of 7 billion tenge ($13.7 million) was allocated for the purchase of sugar beets in 2021, Oserbay added.

Another plant is planned to be built in the Pavlodar region, the construction is initiated by provincial government (akimat). The search for an investor has been going on for a year, as the construction has not started yet.
