UNDP (United Nations Development Program) and UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) participate in the implementation of projects for the development of beekeeping in several districts of Karakalpakstan Republic in Uzbekistan, Trend reports citing Uzbek media.

On May 17, 2021, a ceremony was held for the transfer of necessary equipment for the development of beekeeping in the Nukus district of Karakalpakstan Republic. The initiative received support from the Joint UNDP-UNFPA Program “Strengthening the resilience of local communities in the Aral Sea region to environmental, economic vulnerabilities, as well as public health issues”, funded by the government of Japan.

According to the information, in February of this year, within the framework of the implementation of the Joint Program, a competition was announced for accepting applications to support innovative business projects. The selection committee approved 27 projects for co-financing, eight of which were aimed at the development of beekeeping in Bozatausky, Karauzyak and Chimbay districts of Karakalpakstan.

It is reported that eight farmers-beekeepers who arrived in Nukus districts to participate in the ceremony received 80 bee hives.

It is noted that the joint program continues to support local entrepreneurial initiatives in pilot districts. The focus is on building the capacity of budding farmers and entrepreneurs to develop agriculture, manufacturing and service delivery, which is expected to improve the economic well-being of vulnerable communities.
