Iran's alloy steel output rose 17 percent in the first half of the current Iranian year (began on March 21), Iran's IRNA news agency reported on October 17.

Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation, known as IMIDRO, said the country produced 225,000 metric tons of alloy steel in the mentioned period.

Alloy steel is steel that is alloyed with a variety of elements in total amounts between 1.0% and 50% by weight to improve its mechanical properties. Alloy steel is used in exotic and highly-demanding applications, such as in the turbine blades of jet engines, in spacecraft, and in nuclear reactors.

Iran's alloy steel output stood at 193,000 tons in the past Iranian calendar year.

The World Steel Association said in its latest press release that Iran produced 10.63 million metric tons of crude steel in the first eight months of 2014.

The figure shows 6.9 percent increase compared to the same period previous year, Iran's IRNA News Agency reported on September 24.

The country's crude steel output in August amounted to 1.332 million metric tons, which is 3.1 more than same month in 2013.

Iran was the world's 13th biggest producer of steel in August.
