Iran expects to harvest 2.4 million tons of rice this year, the country’s deputy agriculture minister, Abbas Keshavarz, said.

“Last year 2 million tons of rice was harvested in the country, however we expected 1.8 million tons of rice output,” Keshavarz said, Mehr news agency reported June 25.

He further said that Iran’s potato output is expected to remain at the same level of the last year which was 5.2 million tons, adding potato is the second most widely used agricultural product among Iranians after wheat.

Iran’s Agricultural Ministry has announced a ban on rice import which will be imposed as of July 21.

Iran’s rice production stood at 1.8 million tons in 2015. Meanwhile, Iran still depends on rice imports for its domestic consumption. The country’s total consumption stands at 3.2 million tons per year.

The Iranian government bans rice import to support domestic product with only a one or two months break annually.
