A gas pipeline from Damghan to Neka (northern Iran) will come on stream in a few days and eliminate the need for Iran to seek gas from its northern neighbor Turkmenistan.

The announcement was made by Deputy Oil Minister Hamid Reza Araqi, Mehr news agency reported July 29.

To extend further to Sari, capital of Mazandaran Province, the pipeline will be 170 kilometers in length and will be able to convey 40 mcm of gas per day.

Turkmenistan cut the supply of gas to the Islamic Republic on January 1, 2017, due to long-delayed $2 billion debts.

Iran imported about 5.86 bcm of gas from Turkmenistan during the last fiscal year, about 53 percent less than the previous year.
