Russia has started the procedure of delivering the S-300 missile system to Iran, Mehdi Sanaei, the Islamic Republic ambassador to Moscow said, Tasnim news agency reported Nov. 23.

Iran and Russia signed a new contract on the issue and the procedure of delivery of the system is underway, the Iranian diplomat said.

Russia and Iran concluded a contract in 2007 for the supply of S-300 systems, but after the adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution 1929, which provided for the imposition of sanctions on Iran, the realization of the contract was suspended by then president Dmitry Medvedev.

In April this year, Russia's President Vladimir Putin signed a decree removing the ban on the supply of these systems to Iran.

Sanaei said that the former Russian president, who canceled the agreement was a pro-west politician and Moscow now has revised its stance on the issue.

Iran, in response to canceling the missile deal, filed a claim against Russia at the International Court of Arbitration. Currently, the parties are negotiating on the withdrawal of the lawsuit.
