Over 1,500 villages in Iran are without fixed telephone lines.

Reza Rahmani, the Iranian parliament's chairman of industries and mining committee, said it is hard to believe that more than 1,500 villages with over 20 families in Iran are without phone lines, Iran's Fars news agency reported on October 6.

Some 25,000 villages are not under the coverage of cell phone service, he added.

Iran is among the first five countries which have had a growth rate of over 20 percent in telecommunication industry, according to Press TV.

Iran has been awarded the UNESCO special certificate for providing telecommunication services to rural areas.
