An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale shook Iran's Sirch district, located in south-eastern province of Kerman on June 4.
The tremors occurred at 14:24 local time (GMT +4:30 hours), according to a report from the seismography center affiliated with Tehran University Geophysics Institute, Iran's Mehr news agency reported.
The earthquake's epicenter was located in an area 57.61 degrees in longitude and 30.04 degrees in latitude and at a depth of 10 kilometers underground, the country's state-run IRINN TV reported.
There was no immediate report on possible casualties or damage.
On July 28, 1981 the Kerman province was shaken by an earthquake measuring 7.2, the largest and the most destructive earthquake in its history, which killed nearly 3,000 people, left more than 31,000 homeless, and destroyed virtually all buildings in the epicentral region within a radius of 30 km.
The hardest hit place was the Sirch town where about 2,000 people died out of a population of 3,500.
Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth's crust and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.
The deadliest quake in the country was in June 1990 and measured 7.7 on the Richter scale.
About 37,000 people were killed and more than 100,000 injured in the north-western provinces of Gilan and Zanjan. Nearly 27 towns and 1,870 villages were devastated.
