A high-ranking Iraqi army officer was killed and 18 people were wounded in separate bomb and gunfire attacks Monday morning, an Interior Ministry source said, Xinhua reported.

Gunmen with silenced pistols shot and killed Staff Brigadier Abdul Mehdi Kadhim, an officer of the Iraqi Defense Ministry, when he was driving his car in Baghdad's western neighborhood of Ameriyah, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Separately, Mohammed Ghazi, a director general in the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture, was wounded when gunmen opened fire on him with silenced pistols in Baghdad's western district of Qadsiyah, the source said.

Also, a double bomb explosions wounded 15 people, including six soldiers and four policemen, in Ghazaliyah neighborhood. A bomb planted in a car went off and the explosion was followed by another near the Iraqi security forces who had just arrived to secure the scene of the first blast, the source said.

In southern Baghdad, two more people were wounded when a roadside bomb detonated near a convoy of a private security company on the main road passing through Doura district, he added.

The attacks came a day after suicide bombers carried put a major attack on a military base in downtown Baghdad, killing the attackers and up to 12 people, while injuring another 36, according to a statement issued by Baghdad Operations Command late on Sunday.

The command said the deadly attack was carried out by six suicide bombers and a booby-trapped KIA minibus.

Sporadic attacks are still common in Iraq as part of recent deterioration in security, shaping a setback to the efforts of the Iraqi government to restore normalcy in the country days after the U.S. military announced withdrawal of its combat troops from the war-torn country.
