Yemeni tribesmen kidnap Swedish engineer in restive province
Tribesmen demanding the release of a jailed fellow clansman abducted a Swedish engineer in the restive southern Yemeni province of Abyan on Thursday, police sources said, dpa reported.
The Swede, who works for a cement factory, was taken along with his driver at gun point as they left the factory in the Ba-Tais district of Abyan this afternoon, the sources said.
Negotiations with the abductors were under way to secure the release of the hostage, tribal sources told the German Press Agency dpa.
They said the kidnappers belong to the Al Ubad clan, and that they had demanded the release of a member of the clan arrested in 2008 on a murder charge.
The kidnapping of foreigners is a common practice by Yemeni tribes seeking to put pressure on authorities to release jailed relatives.
