A Sunni cleric has been shot dead by militants outside a mosque in Fallujah, Iraq, security sources said Tuesday, DPA reported.

Sheikh Mohamed Khalil Ibrahim was killed after sunset prayers on Monday at a mosque in Fallujah, some 60 kilometres west of Baghdad. No further details were given regarding why he was targeted or who might have been behind the attack.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, police arrested 33 people in a security sweep northeast of Baghdad in the city of Baquba, following a spate of attacks on police in the city.

The arrests come nearly a week after suspected suicide bombers blew up an ambulance in an attack targeting a police office in Baquba, killing 14 people and injuring 64 others.

It was unclear how the bombers got hold of the ambulance, which was loaded with explosives that were detonated in an upscale residential neighbourhood near a kindergarten and a hospital in Baquba.

Local officials blamed the government in Baghdad for the lapse in security in the province.
