A 16-year-old Palestinian youth died early Saturday from a bullet wound sustained during clashes between residents and Israeli police in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Silwan the day before, according to local and medical sources, DPA reported.

Milad Ayyash was shot during the clashes that erupted in the predominantly Arab village after the Friday prayers.

Ayyash, a resident of nearby Ras Al-Amoud, was hit by a bullet and was transported to Makassed hospital on the Mount of Olives. He underwent surgery but died of his wounds early Saturday, hospital sources said.

Police were present in large numbers in several Jerusalem neighbourhoods on Friday in anticipation of unrest as Palestinians began to mark nakba (catastrophe) day, the May 15 anniversary of Israel's founding in 1948.

In the clashes, Palestinian youths pelted Israeli police with rocks in several locations in East Jerusalem Friday, as scattered protests broke out ahead of the nakba anniversary.

Some 34 protesters were arrested and three demonstrators and three policemen were injured.

Residents and witnesses said the police fired tear gas into homes, causing a fire in one of the houses. Residents were taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.
