The reported death of Khamis Gaddafi, the youngest son of the fugitive Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi, is nothing more than "a rumour," NATO said Tuesday, dpa reported.

"There (are) a lot of allegations and rumours about what could have happened to him and to be frank we don't know," NATO military spokesman Roland Lavoie told reporters in Naples, in remarks that were re-transmitted to Brussels.

"At this time I would qualify this as a rumour," Lavoie added.

Khamis, 28, was the commander of a brigade in the pro-Gaddafi forces. His death, allegedly in a battle with rebels near the town of Tarhuna, was reported Tuesday by the BBC, quoting the opposition justice minister Mohamed al-Alagy.
