Libyan fighters to arrive in US for medical care

Arab World Materials 30 October 2011 03:09 (UTC +04:00)

Twenty-four wounded Libyan fighters were expected to arrive later Saturday in Boston for medical treatment, DPA reported.

US State Department officials would join local officials at Boston's Logan airport to welcome them, the department said in a statement. They will be treated at Spaulding Hospital for Continuing Medical Care North Shore, one of the region's leading rehabilitation facilities.

Since the fall of Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi, Germany received its first group of five wounded Libyans nearly two weeks ago. Germany has pledged to take in 150 wounded adults and children.

US officials did not identify the injuries of the 24 fighters to arrive Saturday, but the fact that they were headed to a rehabilitation clinic indicated their medical conditions had been stabilized.

Germany's first five men had spinal injuries, complex fractures and circulatory problems.

Germany's pledged aid has been seen as Berlin's way of making up to the new authorities for not offering military aid during the fighting. Germany is seeking export orders from Libya.
