A meeting of "Friends of Syria", which will be held tomorrow in Tunisia, should give visible results, otherwise the foreign intervention in the Syrian crisis is imminent, head of the London center "Arab East" Salim Zuhairi believes.

"This is not the first conference, discussing ways to solve the Syrian crisis. But until now, all these conferences have been fruitless," Mr Zuhairi told Trend on Thursday.

He said the Syrians are against foreign intervention, but continued violence will lead to this, and in this case military action in the country is also possible.

The expert said a meeting of "Friends of Syria" first of all, aims at protecting the civilian population and stopping the violence in Syria. Discussion of a political solution to the crisis is not planned, he said.

During an emergency meeting of the Arab League foreign ministers Tunisia initiated holding its first international conference of Group 'Friends of Syria'.

Anti-government protests which began in mid-March have persisted in Syria for almost a year. Daily reports are being received about the deaths of people, both civilians and the security forces. According to UN statistics, the total number of victims in the country exceeds 5400 people. The Syrian authorities accuse armed militants of the clashes saying they receive assistance from neighbouring countries.

Russia which previously vetoed the UN Security Council resolution on Syria, has already stated that it will not participate in the conference because the composition of delegates, the agenda and that the focus of the initiative are not clear.

In order to normalize the situation in the country and meet the demands of the opponents of the regime the Syrian government will hold on February 26 referendum on a new constitution.

At the upcoming referendum in Syria Article 8 of the Constitution, which was adopted by Parliament January 31, 1973 will be amended. Along with this article, amendments and supplements to other articles of the Constitution are also planned.
