Syria donor conference opens in Kuwait
A United Nations-sponsored donor conference with the aim of raising 1.5 billion dollars for Syrians opened Wednesday in Kuwait, dpa reported.
The emir of Kuwait Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah pledged 300 million dollars at the gathering of representatives from almost 60 countries, including Russia and Iran.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon told delegates that more than 4 million Syrians were in need of urgent assistance and that the civilians were "suffering tremendously and we should give them the right assistance."
The UN prepares to provide basic needs for four million Syrians inside the country and more than 650,000 refugees displaced by Syria's nearly two-year conflict.
