Ground-based military operations planned by Saudi Arabia in Syria are not directed against Syrian president Bashar Assad, but the IS terrorist organization (ISIL, ISIS, or Daesh), Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said, Al Arabiya TV channel reported Feb. 19.

Saudi Arabia's intention to participate in ground-based operations in Syria is an indicator of the country's partial attitude towards the growth of the terrorism threat in the region, he said.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia announced its intention to participate in ground-based operations in Syria.

The armed conflict has been observed in Syria since March 2011. According to the UN, more than 220,000 people were killed. The governmental troops confront with the militants belonging to various armed groups.
