Israel's ruling Likud party wants the country to go to early elections on September 4, 13 months ahead of schedule, Israel Radio reported Wednesday.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, of the Likud, had raised the possibility of early elections earlier this week, but without mentioning a date, dpa reported.

But the Likud and three other parties, who together form a majority of 61 in the 120-seat Knesset, reached agreement late Wednesday on the September 4 date.

The agreement resulted in the coalition whip table a bill to dissolve the Israeli parliament. A vote on the bill, finalizing the date, is expected early next week.

Netanyahu wants early elections to avoid being held political ransom by his coalition partners over upcoming votes on two major issues - Israel's two-year budget and compulsory national or military service for ultra-Orthodox Jews.

With the Liku high in opinion polls, he has said he is not afraid of an early election.

Opposition leader Shaul Mofaz prefers October 16 as a date for early elections, but his centrist Kadima party issued a statement saying it would back any proposal for early elections, on any date voted on by the Knesset.

Mofaz was elected as Kadima leader little more than a month ago, and would prefer more time to establish himself.
